12 Home Remedies for Back Spasms

September 19, 2017

Back spasms are a form of muscle spasm that, as the name suggests, overtakes your back area. It’s an affliction that acts out by causing pulsating-like sensations at the level of your muscles, stiffness, and pain. There can be numerous of different reasons behind the apparition and development of this condition, most of which are external factors. For example, accidentally doing the right kind of movement or straining your body too much has the potential of leading into a case of back spasms. Since back pains, even in the muscles, are nothing to joke around with, you should be careful to consult a doctor and make sure that there aren’t (or are) any things that you should expressively do. Below, you will find an extensive list of the best home remedies for back spasms.

We will enlist some of the most efficient and affordable treatments for this particular issue, together with clear instructions detailing what you need to do in order to prepare your very own homemade treatment.

1. Clove Oil

At the start of the list, we have cloves, which are reliable home remedies for back spasms, as well as various types of muscle cramps. It’s an excellent treatment due to its ability to keep under control the uncontrolled pulsations of the muscles. Moreover, it can provide relief to pain and the oiliness will also improve mobility to an extent.

Instructions:

  • All you have to do is to warm up a little bit of clove oil.
  • Afterwards, you just have to apply it to the suffering area by using massaging, circular motions. This will also stimulate circulation and boost your recovery.
  • Keep doing this for 15 minutes and then repeat as many times as you need for the pain to completely submerge.

2. Rosemary

Rosemary is one of the best herbal home remedies for back spasms for sure. It’s soothing in nature and acts as a natural anti-inflammatory agent that will also help your muscles relax whenever they’re feeling too stressed. That being said, creating an infusion with rosemary is going to help you find the relief that you’re seeking.

Instructions:

  • Acquire 3 ounces of dried rosemary leaves and then add them to 8 cups of water.
  • Place the pot over heat and let it boil for a few minutes.
  • Once you remove it from heat, let it steep for around 20 minutes.
  • Soak a piece of cloth in this solution and then place it against your back for 15 minutes.
  • For the effects to appear, do this treatment 2-3 times a day for the following 2-3 days.

3. Cayenne Pepper

Home Remedies for Back Spasms

Cayenne pepper is probably one of those old school treatments that most people just won’t shut up about. But the good thing is that all this hype definitely has a solid foundation behind. Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, an anti-inflammatory compound that brings relief through its thermogenic properties that will give a boost to your blood flow.

Instructions:

  • Mix 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder with 2 tablespoons of olive oil.
  • Blend everything together well and then apply the resulting solution to the area of your back that’s hurting.
  • Lastly, repeat this process twice a day to ensure that it’s actually effective and that the pain will go away.

4. Wintergreen Oil

Wintergreen is, generally speaking, a relatively obscure remedy. Yet those that have crossed paths with the herb will probably vouch for the fact that it’s excellent when you’re in desperate need of something to treat strain, inflammations, and pain. With wintergreen oil, you’ll be able to find a way to finally relax again.

Instructions:

  • Blend 2 teaspoons of wintergreen oil with 8 teaspoons of any vegetable oil of your choice.
  • Afterwards, apply this mixture to the sensitive area and attempt some circular massage motions for a quick relief.
  • You can repeat this remedy several times until you get the results that you desire.

5. Ginger

Ginger is another famous anti-inflammatory remedy that people have been using for a very long time. It works extremely well against all kinds of inflammations and swellings, including those that keep showing up in the back area. It will soothe your muscles from the inside-out and help you regain some relaxation once more.

Instructions:

  • First, grab a ginger root and cut a small piece.
  • Drop the ginger root in a pot which contains 2 cups of water.
  • Place the pot over heat and then boil the entire mixture for 10 minutes.
  • Strain it, add some honey according to personal taste, and then make sure to enjoy at least 2 cups of this tea daily.
  • You may also find plenty of ginger tea bags readily available at pretty much any store.

6. Cold Compress

Possibly one of the most affordable and resource-free home remedies for back spasms around, cold compresses are quite undeniably the oldest remedy. Applying something cold to your nerves and muscles is going to result in a numb effect that will ultimately make the pain submerge. If you want this method to work as best as possible, make sure to utilize it at most 48 hours since the apparition of the first symptoms.

Instructions:

  • Grab a fistful of ice cubes and then either place them inside a plastic bag first, either directly wrap them in a thin towel.
  • Press this compress directly to the affected area and keep it on for 15 minutes.
  • Repeat this procedure twice every day for the next few days until the symptoms disappear.

7. Hot Compress

Just like cold, heat has its own part to play. It will bring relaxation to your muscles by improving your circulatory system. The more blood flows to your muscles, the better they’ll be able to relax. As a result, hot compresses have been making some of the most efficient home remedies for back spasms ever.

Instructions:

  • There are several ways through which you can make use of this treatment. The simplest way is to fill a water bottle or a plastic bag with hot water and to then press it against the affected area for 15 minutes. You may also use a heating pad if you happen to have one.
  • Alternatively, you can take a hot shower, applying a not-so-strong jet of water directly to the affected area for 10 minutes.
  • Repeat this as many times as you see it fit if the pain didn’t submerge the first time around.

8. Epsom Salt

Home Remedies for Back Spasms

Containing high concentrations of magnesium, Epsom salt makes an incredible remedy. Magnesium contributes to the bettering of your blood flow, thus facilitating faster and more effective healing. Epsom salt baths are some of the most reliable home remedies for back spasms, but they can provide lots of relaxation to the muscles in your whole body as well.

Instructions:

  • Fill a tub with warm water and then add 2 cups of Epsom salt.
  • Stir thoroughly as to incorporate the salt in the whole mass.
  • Soak in this mixture for 20 minutes and let it work its magic on your aching muscles.
  • Technically, undergoing this treatment once is going to be enough for it to work. However, there’s nothing stopping you from attempting you again if you still need some relief.

9. Mustard Oil

Mustard oil is capable of accomplishing most things from above. In other words, it will give a boost to the flow of your blood, it will soothe pain, and it will comfort you with analgesic properties.

Instructions:

  • Take a garlic and peel off 10 cloves, which you should then mince.
  • Add 4 tablespoons of mustard oil to a particular container and then add in the garlic cloves.
  • Heat up the mustard oil until the garlic cloves you’ve placed inside turn a brown shade.
  • Let the mixture cool down to room temperature and then strain it.
  • Massage this mixture into the sensitive area, preferably using a cotton pad or a ball for a better control.
  • Keep doing this a few times a day for the next few days until you see a drastic amelioration.

10. Castor Oil

Another type of oil that you can use as one of the home remedies for back spasms we’ve recommended, castor oil stands out most by being an excellent circulatory system booster.

Instructions:

  • Pour a little bit of castor oil in a bowl and then warm well.
  • Before going to bed, dip a cotton cloth in the oil and then wrap it around the area that’s bothering you.
  • Cover with a plastic wrap to avoid any oil stains and then leave on overnight.

11. Lavender Oil

Home Remedies for Back Spasms

Lavender oil has deep relaxing properties that can numb out the pain and the soreness. Many people have used lavender oil throughout history to treat inflammations and this is the reason why.

Instructions:

  • First of all, relax your neck muscles by taking a bath.
  • Afterwards, you can simply add a few drops of lavender oil to the tips of your fingers and rub it gently against your affected area.
  • If your neck doesn’t hurt while doing this, you can attempt a light massage which will help remove the strain from your muscles.

12. Turmeric

Packed with the famous compound called curcumin, turmeric is definitely not the least at the bottom of this list. It’s one of nature’s most powerful anti-inflammatory agents, being able to successfully bring down a notch most inflammations and swellings in your body. Back spasms aren’t fortunate enough to be an exception.

Instructions:

  • Add 1 tablespoon of turmeric to a glass of milk and stir together well so that everything incorporates properly.
  • Heat up over stove or in microwave for a few minutes.
  • Remove from heat and then stir in a little bit of honey, just enough to make it taste good enough for you.
  • Wait for the drink to cool down.
  • Finally, drink this combination twice a day until you no longer experience back spasms.

Like most afflictions that involve back pain and muscles, back spasms are definitely unpleasant and can be difficult to deal with. As I get older, I’ve noticed I get back spasms from time to time. I wasn’t sure what cause them until I read this blog on 12 home remedies for back spasms. They’re usually not too painful, but they can be annoying (although I know they can be painful for some). Glad to see there are options other than heat and cold (although those do work). By the way, any home remedies for Charlie horses?

“Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On” is not what I want for my back, but I’ve been frustrated how to deal with back spasms. I’ve heard about home remedies, but never took them seriously until 10 years ago when I started trying some instead of popping pills. Your 12 home remedies for back spasms have two things I’ve used, but I want to try clove oil next. I’ve read that it’s good as a home remedy for other things too.
